To better understand how to design for the perfect landscaped yard, the two main elements that make up outdoor living spaces are referred to as Hardscape and Softscape. Hardscape are man-made features used in landscape architecture, like Paver Paths or Retaining Walls, Stone Veneer, Stone Patios as contrasted with all vegetation. So basically, Hardscape is the hard stuff in your yard: concrete, bricks, and stone. ... As for the backyard: an overabundance of Hardscape does not create a relaxing, paradise-like atmosphere. As a homeowner you need a good mix of hardscape and softscape in your yard to create the perfect atmosphere. Softscape is the soft, growing stuff, like perennial flowers, shrubs, succulents, and trees. Softscape is living; hardscape is not.
